Simple portrait work is what I fall back to when I find myself stuck in a rut. Fortunately model Brittany was willing to step in front of the camera. Getting a model to step in front of the camera also gives me the chance to test out different types of film. All these portraits were shot on the Contax 645  with film types of Ektar 100, Fuji 400H and Delta Illford 3200. You can probably tell which is which, but I’m in love with the black and white film.

A simple portrait shoot can be as easy as finding a model from somewhere like Model Mayhem or Instagram, and having them do their own hair and makeup. I personally love working with models because they are so much more comfortable with a female photographer than a male photographer. I’ve always had a problem with the way fashion portrays models. Some photographers and fashion labels use women to sell products in the most basic way possible. I would prefer to find new ways to show people, specifically women and beauty.

Another favorite photo session we did was also with a few new models and testing them on camera. You can see that gallery in this blog post. And we collaborated with one of our favorite makeup artists, Real Doll Makeup. It’s probably time for a few more rounds of simple portrait sessions in the studio here in Colorado.
