Union Market Portraits

A little Northeast DC / Union Market fun on a cold winter day

Union Market is perfect for portraits. And living within walking distance from Union Market makes us want to take advantage of this setting. On top of that, when I saw this gorgeous couple at our local NOMA Starbucks, I knew I had to capture them at Union Market for portraits. 

If you’re not familiar with Union Market in Washington, DC then it’s definitely a place to visit. It’s a historic market in DC that has been recently refurbished by new owners. Many food halls and vendors are located in the market, making it quite the foodie destination. 

This was a first for me. Going up to a total stranger and asking them if they would pose for photos. Fortunately they were very nice about it and totally on board. I asked them to wear whatever they’d like and we would run around the warehouse district around Union Market. We played with the large and colorful murals around the exterior of the buildings. At the end of the shoot, the couple cozied up in a chair at Dolcezza to warm up with some espresso. It’s only fitting that we started this adventure in a coffee shop and ended at one as well. 

Given how fun this shoot was, I need to go up to many more strangers and take their photos. At this time I was still in the process of learning how to shoot film, so opportunities like this were priceless in my learning adventure. My biggest lesson was this, no one will be upset that you asked them to model for them.
